When gum disease is left untreated, it advances to periodontitis. This stage is characterized by the gums separating from the teeth, allowing pockets to develop. This gives the infection more space to spread extensively, leading to the destruction of bone and tissue.
At this point, only surgical procedures can be used to stop the infection and replace damaged parts. Here are the surgical treatments for gum disease:

Flap Surgery

This procedure is done to remove tartar (hardened plaque) from deep pockets in the gum. The gums are shifted back from the teeth for easy access. After removal, the surface of the jaw bone is smoothened to prevent further infection.

Soft Tissue Grafts

Periodontitis causes the gums to recede from the teeth, making the teeth seem longer. To fix this recession, tissue grafting is needed. The tissue is removed from a part of the body (usually the roof of the mouth), and it is used to cover the exposed area.

Guided Tissue Regeneration

This procedure is necessary in cases where the bone that supports the teeth is compromised. A mesh-like material is placed between gum tissue and jaw bone to prevent the gum from entering spaces the bone will grow into. This stimulates the regrowth of bone and connective tissues.

Bone Grafts

Bone grafts are used to replace destroyed jaw bone. Removing the infected bone stops further damage and holds the teeth firmly in place, giving them a solid base to regrow. The bone may be manufactured in a lab, taken from a donor, or removed from another part of the patient’s body.

The progression of gum disease to the point where only surgery can fix it takes years, giving you enough time to seek treatment and stop its advancement. If you notice that your teeth are receding, your gum is inflamed, or pockets are forming between your teeth and gums, visit a dentist immediately.
